SEVENTEEN

DEVON

I step into the ornate hotel lobby, my arm wrapped around a tipsy, breathless, beautiful Mila. Glancing up at the intricate chandeliers, we make our way to reception. The hotel is five-star and seeped in Southern grandeur. While I’ve stayed at luxury hotels all over the country, escaping here for a night with Mila feels different. Exhilarating in a way I haven’t experienced since I first made it to the league.

“Welcome to Premier, how may I assist you?” the man behind the desk asks, folding his hands together.

Mila giggles and I tuck her under my arm, desperate to get her upstairs. She spent the entire evening charming every guy on my team until they all looked at her with admiration and a protectiveness I feel bone-deep. And damn if I wasn’t proud as hell, witnessing the way my team cares about her. I’ve never known a woman who could make an entire hockey team fall in love with her until Mila.

“One suite, just for tonight.” I slide my black credit card over.

The man squints, as if trying to place me. I smile, knowing he won’t. When I first landed in Tennessee, it irked me that no one gave a shit about hockey. I hated that I went from being recognized and asked for selfies or autographs, to a nobody.

But now, I relish it. It means I can slip into hotels with my girlfriend and not be hounded by strangers for details, know our photos won’t be plastered on a blog tomorrow morning.

The man runs my card and hands me the key card, indicating the route to the elevators. “And for your bags—”

“We don’t have any,” Mila announces, shrugging adorably.

I chuckle. “I got it from here, thanks.” I hang onto Mila as we make our way to the elevator.

I don’t know if it’s the alcohol buzzing through my limbs—we took an Uber to the hotel—or the scent of Mila’s perfume, or the fact that we’re here, together, making memories, but I feel love drunk. The world looks different, brimming with a brightness I’m unaccustomed to. I want everyone to know just how happy Mila makes me. I want to revel in this moment, in this feeling, indefinitely.

And, I’m not used to it. Being this happy, fulfilled. Living a full life instead of giving off the impression that I have it all. Perception is sneaky as hell.

Slipping the key card into the door, I push it open and gesture for Mila to enter. She walks in and sighs, that sound brimming with the same fulfillment thrumming through my veins.

Spinning around, she drops her cross-body purse to the floor and kicks off her heels. Then, she twirls, squeals, and hops up on the bed, jumping like a little kid.

“Mila!” I laugh, stepping toward her.

Gone are the sexy bedroom eyes and sultry looks. In their place, I see a beautiful, vibrant, enthusiastic woman I want to cherish. She holds out a hand to me and, kicking off my shoes, I join her.

It’s ridiculous. It’s nothing I’d ever be caught doing.
